Alhambra Palace tickets can be surprisingly difficult to get—sometimes it really does feel like “Mission Impossible.” Many visitors don’t realize that the Alhambra is the most visited monument in Spain, welcoming close to 8,500 visitors per day in high season. Add limited daily availability, timed entry rules, and long queues, and it’s easy to see why people get stressed.
But it doesn’t have to be complicated. With a bit of planning (and a couple of insider tips), you can visit this incredible monument without wasting valuable Granada time—especially that precious time you could be spending on tapas.
Why the Alhambra sells out so easily
With its stone walls carved in arabesques and Islamic calligraphy, calm courtyards, bubbling fountains, carefully designed gardens, and sweeping views over Granada, the Alhambra is the city’s star attraction. It’s not surprising that tickets sell out, lines can be long, and the entry rules—particularly for the Nasrid Palaces—can be confusing.
A “standard” Alhambra route is roughly 3.5 km and usually takes around 3 hours to visit the three areas of the enclosure. There’s a large car park, and you’ll also find bars and restaurants where you can grab an inexpensive menu or a snack.
The golden rule: book in advance
If you can do one thing right, do this:
Purchase your tickets in advance.
Tickets can be purchased up to 3 months ahead and up to 2 hours prior to the visit time for the Nasrid Palaces—but only if tickets are still available.
And here’s the important part: when you book, you must reserve a specific time to enter the Nasrid Palaces. If you’re late, you won’t get in. They are strict.
Can you buy Alhambra tickets the same day?
Yes… but be realistic.
If you must buy tickets on the day of your visit, don’t plan on sleeping in. Have a strong café solo and arrive at the ticket office before it opens at 8:30 am. The earlier you arrive, the better your chance of finding availability and avoiding the worst of the line.
Consider the off-season (but still plan)
Visiting between November and early March can make things easier, but the Alhambra is popular year-round. Even in the off-season, advance booking—or an early morning strategy—is still wise.
Alhambra ticket types (entries)
Here are the main ticket types and prices listed:
- Alhambra General (Generalife, Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces and Gardens) — 14,85 eur
- Gardens, Generalife and Alcazaba (Generalife, Alcazaba and gardens) — 7,42 eur
- Night Visit to Generalife — 5,30 eur
- Night visit to Nasrid Palaces — 8,48 eur
- Alhambra Experiences: night ticket for Nasrid Palaces + next-day ticket for Alhambra, Generalife, and Alcazaba — 14,85 eur
How the Nasrid Palaces schedule works (and how not to miss it)
When you buy your ticket, you’ll be assigned a half-hour time slot to enter the Nasrid Palaces. You can’t be late. There is usually a queue, but sometimes people in front are queued for the next slot.
A helpful detail: Alhambra staff often walk through the line to check tickets and ensure people for a specific time don’t miss their turn. If you arrive close to your time, show your ticket to an employee so they can confirm whether you should move forward.
A faster, easier option: go with a guided tour
One of the best ways to avoid getting lost in a huge monument—and to reduce waiting—is to book a tour. Guides can use a different entrance where long lines are not typical, which makes the experience more efficient and less stressful.
If you’re interested, you can explore options like Alhambra Palace Private Tours or read about a dedicated private tour. You’ll not only save time, you’ll also gain context that brings the monument to life.
Don’t forget: children also need tickets
Even if children don’t pay, they still need to have a ticket. And if you’re using a discount category (pensioner, youth, child), you must bring proof.
